Duke Cancels Plans for New Units at the Harris Nuclear Plant

Duke Energy will no longer pursue licensing for two new reactors at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant near Raleigh, N.C., the company announced Thursday.

“The Harris site is well-suited for new nuclear generation and has not been eliminated from our long-term consideration as a site to expand our nuclear fleet,” Duke Energy Nuclear President Dhiaa Jamil said in a release. Nonetheless, the company does not forecast a need for the new units in the next 15 years, and Duke has suspended its pursuit of combined licenses for them.

Prior to its acquisition by Duke, Progress Energy applied to build two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at the plant in 2008. They would join the existing Westinghouse reactor at the site first licensed in 1986, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Duke noted in its announcement that it will continue the licensing process for new reactors at its Lee site in South Carolina and at its Levy County site in Florida.
