The discovery of radioactive material beneath a bird's nest stopped work at parts of the Hanford vitrification plant Wednesday.Bechtel National is managing construction of the 65-acre complex at the Department of Energy site in Washington. A company spokesman told the Tri-City Herald that the low-level contamination likely came from mud gathered at a different part of the site and used by a swallow to build the nest. In response, some 130 workers at two incomplete buildings were checked for contamination. None was found. But because of the incident, union workers at the high-level waste and pretreatment buildings went home early Wednesday.Work was expected to resume on Thursday, the Herald reported, following site surveys and the isolation of any contaminated areas.
