The country's sole uranium conversion plant in Metropolis, Ill., will be allowed to resume operations, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Tuesday.The NRC forced the plant to close in May of 2012 following inspection reports identifying plant equipment potentially vulnerable to earthquakes and tornadoes. Since then, Honeywell International has modified plant systems to meet requirements the NRC outlined in October, and the plant resumed limited operations in June.The facility converts milled natural uranium into uranium hexafluoride gas that can be enriched. According to WPSD News, Honeywell has not provided a date when it will restart production. Earlier the company aimed to resume operations in July. The closure resulted in 228 layoffs.
