Green Mountain Power, Entergy Settle Vermont Yankee Cooling Tower Collapse Suit

An out-of-court settlement has resolved a dispute over the cost of partial cooling tower collapses at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant several years ago.

The Barre Montpelier Times Argus reported Tuesday that Entergy has paid Green Mountain Power for costs related to 10 days in 2007 and 12 days in 2008 when the plant was forced to run at reduced power. The companies would not disclose the settlement amount. GMP had sued Entergy in early 2012, arguing the Vermont utility's additional cost for replacement power amounted to $70,000 per day.

The Vermont Yankee, first licensed in 1972, used two 11-cell cooling towers supported by wooden frames, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The agency concluded that Entergy's maintenance of the structures contributed to degradation from fungus and iron salts that led to the collapse of cells. Entergy operates the plant, and GMP held a contract to purchase power from it.
