Operators took New Jersey's Oyster Creek nuclear plant offline Monday to repair equipment in its turbine.Quoting a statement from plant owner Exelon, the Newark Star-Ledger reported crews could not conduct the work on a turbine speed controller with the plant in operation. The company did not estimate how long the outage would last, noting that crews will also conduct unrelated maintenance tasks in the interim. The reactor had been brought down to 53 percent power at the time of a status report published Monday by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. According to the NRC, the plant near Toms River, N.J., uses a single General Electric Type 2 boiling water reactor. Brought online in December of 1969, it is the oldest operating power reactor in the U.S.
