Operators began powering up Exelon's Oyster Creek nuclear plant in New Jersey Sunday only to shut it down because of a problem with the condenser. At about 10:40 a.m., the General Electric Type 2 boiling water reactor was at about 20 percent power when the main condenser vacuum began to drop, according to a report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The manual shutdown just under an hour later was uncomplicated. An NRC spokesman told the Star-Ledger the leak was later traced to an expansion joint. On Sept. 30, repairs to a turbine speed controller required that the reactor be taken offline. As it was initially powering up Thursday, the unit shut down automatically. According to the NRC, the cause was an invalid scram signal processed on both trip systems of the reactor protection system.
