San Onofre RPV Head Shipped to Utah

A reactor pressure vessel head from the San Onofre nuclear plant is making its way to a disposal site in Utah.

San Diego's KFMB News reported that the 77-ton component left the plant Monday night for the three-day trip. It is headed to the same waste facility west of Salt Lake City where the plant has previously sent its used steam generators.

The unit 2 RPV head was removed two years ago, and a utility spokeswoman told Fox 5 San Diego the shipment is not part of the plant's decommissioning process. Southern California Edison decided earlier this year not to restart the two-unit plant following premature wear to newly installed steam generators.

EnergySolutions operates a waste disposal facility in Clive, Utah, that can accommodate Class A nuclear waste.
