The unit was shut down at the time and no injuries or radiological releases were reported.

Later that afternoon, Exelon said in a release that the plant was stable and in the process of cancelling the alert. The plant had shut down Monday to replace a valve on the control rod drive system. In statements to local media, the utility indicated the smoke might have originated from an electrical short.

Unit 1 remained at full power. Together, the two General Electric type 3 boiling water reactors near Moline, Ill., generate 1,819 megawatts.
