Heysham 1 and Hartlepool to Operate Cautiously for Two Years

EDF Energy said two twin reactors in Britain, Heysham 1 and Hartlepool will operate at 75 percent to 80 percent of their previous capacity for as long as two years due to fears that excessive heat in the boilers could cause cracks to develop.

The reactors have been shut down since August after cracks were found in Heysham's boiler system.

Capacity and demand are so balanced in Britain that the shutdowns at have forced the emergency startup of closed power stations to make up for lost production.

The restarts would be gradually, The Telegraph reported.

The safety shut downs were expected to last two months with EDF already announcing that safety checks of eight boilers were required before the reactors could be brought back on line.

Two reactors would restart before Nov. 9, while another would restart before Nov. 22, an earlier restart than previously announced.

The reactor with the damaged boiler is scheduled for a restart before the end of the year.
