Perry Plant Restarted After Week Long Shutdown

The Perry nuclear power plant in North Perry, Ohio, was restarted Monday at noon after a week long shutdown, the Plain Dealer reported.

The 1,260MW plant shut down a week ago during a routine maintenance operation in which engineers were switching feedwater pumps from one electrical circuit to another, the newspaper said.

Engineers said an electrical circuit card in a power inverter that converts direct current to alternating current triggered the shut down, as the feedwater pumps that keep fuel rods submerged operate with AC current.

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. spokeswoman Jennifer Young said there were no injuries or radiation leaks caused by the incident.

The plant restarted at 65 percent of capacity, the newspaper reported.
