NRC Staff Views Fermi 3 Proposal Favorably

DTE Energy Electric Co., owner/operator of the Fermi 2 General Electric Type 4 boiling water reactor in the Frenchtown Charter Township of Michigan, could have a shot at constructing a third reactor at the site, media reports indicate.

Fermi Unit 2, NRCEarly Monday morning, it was reported that Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff had recommended that an operating license for a third reactor be approved. The Associated Press carried the story.

A construction license is also included in the recommendation, the Monroe News reported.

Fermi Unit 1 has been shut down since Dec. 31, 1975, after a fitful track record that included the meltdown of two of the reactor's 105 fuel assemblies in October 1966.

Fermi Unit 2 has an operating license that is good through March 20, 2025.

DTE is not committed to building a new reactor, said Guy Cerullo, the manager of nuclear communications at Fermi.

The proposal for Fermi 3 calls for a 1,560 MW reactor that would compliment the 1,170 MW Fermi Unit 2.
