Energy Northwest, a multi-district energy agency in Washington State has retained Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) to continue to supply fuel for the Columbia Generating Station in Richland, Wa.
GNF is a joint venture between General Electric, Toshiba Corporation and Hitachi Ltd., that is led by GE.
The new fuel supply contract, valued at approximately $90 million, secures a fuel supply for the generating station from 2019 through 2027. This will cover five fuel reloads for the 1,190 MW boiling water reactor, GNF said.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 4 plant, 20 miles north-northeast of Pasco, Wa., began using GNF2 fuel in 2015. The fuel, says GNF, is designed to deliver increased energy output, while decreasing overall fuel cycle costs. The savings are achieved by "reducing the total amount of uranium required and the average enrichment in fuel reloads," the company said.
Fuel for the Columbia NPP is fabricated at the GNF facility in Wilmington, N.C.
