NRC Grants Grand Gulf 20 Year License Extension

Another U.S. nuclear power plant, the Grand Gulf plant 20 miles southwest of Vicksburg, Mississippi, has been granted a 20 year extension on its operating license, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said Thursday.

Grand Gulf NPPThe plant's operator, Entergy Operations Inc., submitted the renewal license application Nov. 1, 2011. The General Electric Type 6 Boiling Water Reactor located in Port Gibson, Miss., is now licensed through Nov. 1, 2044. The plant was granted its original license in 1984 with that permit set to expire in November 2024.

The extension application process and review includes two broad categories involving a look at safety issues and environmental impact. The agency's safety evaluation report was issued Oct. 18, 2016. The supplemental environment impact statement was issued Nov. 28, 2014. Both documents are available at the regulator's website.

The license extension brings the number of nuclear power plants with 20-year extensions in the country up to 86, the NRC said.
