Vermont Yankee Sale Would Accelerate Decommissioning

The sale of the shuttered Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vt., could result in an accelerated schedule for decommissioning for the 620-MW plant that shut down at the end of 2014 after 42 years of operations.

Vermont YankeeThe plant's owner, Entergy Corporation, has signed an agreement with NorthStar that would transfer ownership of the plant and provide NorthStar with financial assurances, the AP news service reported Tuesday.

The agreement calls for NorthStart to initiate decommissioning by 2021. This would be years ahead of Entergy's proposed schedule.

The two companies agreed to seek regulatory approval for the sale this year with the intent of having the sale take place before the end of the year.
