The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Tuesday that it had published the final supplemental environmental impact statement for renewing the operating license of the Waterford nuclear power plant in Louisiana, concluding there were no environmental issues that would stand in the way of a 20-year license extension for the power plant.
"The report contains the NRC staff’s evaluation and conclusion that the adverse environmental impacts would not preclude renewing the license for an additional 20 years of operation," the NRC said.
Waterford is a pressurized-water reactor located about 25 miles west of New Orleans. Entergy Operations Inc. and Entergy Louisiana LLC submitted the renewal application on March 30, 2016. The NRC’s review of the application consists of a technical safety review and an environmental review.
The final supplemental environmental impact statement is supplement 59 to NUREG-1437, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, which is available on the NRC’s website
