Russian nuclear power giant Rosatom has signed two memorandum of understanding along with the Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) that outlines cooperation in education, personnel training and working with to shape public opinion on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
The documents were signed by Nikolay Spasskiy, Deputy Director General of ROSATOM from the Russian side, and Dr. Sinava Souphanouvong, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines of Lao PDR, Rosatom announced Wednesday.
Under the first memorandum, ROSATOM (the Russian Federation) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Lao People’s Democratic Republic) are to implement a number of joint educational projects in the use of nuclear power. The goals provide for establishing education programs for Lao students at Russian universities as well as their practical training, development of educational and scientific materials, international student exchange, academic Olympics and teachers’ training.
The second memorandum envisages the parties’ joint activities for nuclear energy promotion in Lao PDR, as well as building of public awareness of modern nuclear technology.
Signed documents mark the second stage of mutual efforts between the two countries aimed at the strengthening of the Lao-Russian cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
The prior round of cooperation agreements in nuclear energy between the Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and ROSATOM was signed in April 2016. On September 26, 2017, in Moscow, on the sidelines of the meeting between Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister of Lao PDR Thongloun Sisoulith, a roadmap for Russian-Lao cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy was signed.
