The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) in Abu Dhabi said Wednesday that construction at Unit 2 of the four-unit Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant has been completed. “ENEC hands over the systems of Unit 2 to Nawah Energy Company,” the corporation said naming the subsidiary that will operate the plant along with the primary builder, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
The Nawah team “now commences operational readiness activities,” ENEC said, noting that operations depend on approval from FANR, the country’s nuclear power regulator. “Regulatory approval from FANR required, and international assessments to take place prior to Unit 2 Fuel Load,” the company said.
There are four units planed at the site and together the construction is deemed to be 94 percent complete. Unit 1 construction was completed in 2018 with fuel loaded for the first time in March of this year. Units 3 and 4 are 92 percent and 85 percent complete, respectively.
