Rosatom Establishes Ties With Nicaragua

Russia's state-owned nuclear power Rosatom said Tuesday that corporation delegates and Nicaraguan officials on December 7 signed a Memorandum of Understanding that paves the way for cooperation on an array of nuclear technologies.

Rosatom, Nicaragua MOUThe signing took place in Moscow, where Deputy Director General for International Cooperation of Rostom Nikolay Spasskiy met with Minister of Finance and National Debt of Nicaragua, Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Nicaraguan Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation Ivаn Acosta, Special Representative of the President of Nicaragua for Relations with the Russian Federation Laureano Ortega and Representative of the President of Nicaragua Rafael Ortega.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Nicaragua to the Russian Federation Alba Azucena Torres and Nikolay Spasskiy signed the Memorandum of Understanding between ROSATOM and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua that spelled out cooperation in nuclear technologies all slated for peaceful purposes.

The document, the first cooperative agreement between the two parties, sets forth a basis for the development of cooperation in a wide range of areas, in particular, raising public awareness about nuclear technologies, the development of nuclear infrastructure of the Republic of Nicaragua, non-energy applications of nuclear energy in industry, agriculture and medicine.

As soon as the pandemic situation allows, the parties will organize in-person consultations on the implementation of the agreement, Rosatom said.
