TVO Requests Permission To Fire Up Olkiluoto 3

Finland’s power company Teollisuuden Voima Oyi (TVO) said Wednesday it had sent its application in to the country’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority asking permission to start up the Olkiluoto 3 EPR power plant and to move forward with initial testing of the unit.

Olkiluoto 3The move advances the previously announced schedule up by at least a month. The most recently anticipated schedule for the first criticality for the long-delayed plant was for a January 2022 start up.

TVO, together with plant supplier AREVA-Siemens consortium, has established that the OL3 EPR project has progressed faster than previously communicated,” the company said.

Once STUK has granted the permission for making the reactor critical and conducting low power tests to the OL3 EPR plant unit, TVO will communicate its potential effects on the schedule for starting electricity production.

The OL3 EPR plant supplier consortium is constructing the plant unit under a fixed-price turnkey contract. The supplier consortium companies, AREVA GmbH, AREVA NP SAS, and Siemens AG, have joint and several liability for the contractual obligations until the end of the guarantee period of the plant unit.
