Unit 2 Reactor Pressure Vessel Installed At Akkuyua

In Byuykecili of the Mersin Province in Turkey, the reactor pressure vessel for Unit 2 of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant construction site has been installed, said operations manager Akkuyu Nukleer.

Akkuyu Unit 2 RPVThe RPV component was delivered by ship from Volgodonsk in late December 2021. In storage, the RPV underwent extensive inspections. It was then installed into place by use of a Liebherr LR 13000 crawler crane in an operation that took six hours.

"The installation of the Unit 2 reactor pressure vessel is one of the main events of this year. I would like to note the impeccable work done by the installation team and lifting equipment operators,” said Director of Akkuyu NPP under Construction Sergei Butckikh.

Butckikh said the vessel installation requires exceptional precision: the maximum permissible horizontal deviation does not exceed a tenth of a millimeter.

During the previous construction stages of Unit 2 reactor building, the core catcher was installed; concrete-pouring of support and thrust trusses was performed; dry protection and thermal insulation of the cylindrical part of the reactor vessel were installed. The support ring which bears most of the vessel's weight, was installed prior to the RPV installation.

Unit 2 RPV installation was inspected by the committee comprising specialists of the vessel manufacturer, an independent inspection organization and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) of Turkey.

RPV is one of the main LCP equipment of nuclear power plants. During the NPP operation, the reactor vessel contains the core. The core houses nuclear fuel, structural components for nuclear reaction and transfer of thermal energy to the coolant. The physical dimensions of the RPV are as follows: height – 11.45 meters, diameter – 5.6 meters, weight – 342.2 tons.

The manufacturing of RPV for Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 began in early March 2019. In the course of manufacturing, the whole set of tests was performed, including hydraulic tests and inspection assembly with reactor internals. Based on the test results, a special committee confirmed high quality of the equipment as well as the compliance with all design parameters.
